Since 1980, the year he first read Dan Inosanto's The Filipino Martial Arts, Lynn C. Thompson, President of Cold Steel, has been extensively involved in Filipino martial arts and actively trains in this sport. His extensive sparring experience, combined with active research and intensive training, has significantly contributed to making Cold Steel the company it is today.

In length, weight and cross-section, the Cold Steel Escrima stick resembles the traditional rattan stick. However, it is injection-moulded from black, extremely durable polypropylene, making it much more long-lasting. Unlike rattan, this material is mould-resistant and will not dry out, warp, crack, splinter or shrink. With the appropriate saw, this Eskrima stick can also be easily shortened as desired. Furthermore, it is easy to clean, weather-resistant and so impact-resistant that it can be considered virtually indestructible.
