Traditional cutting test with the samurai sword

This straw mat is used to carry out the traditional Japanese cutting test with a samurai sword. The time-honored art of Tameshigiri, which was practiced in Japan both to check the sharpness and efficiency of swords and to demonstrate the skills of sword testers and swordsmen, is still very popular today. Various cuts and cutting techniques are practiced on the Omote mats with a sharp sword, one or two hands. The quality of the blade and the skill of the person performing the cut can be seen on the mat's cut surface.

Properties and Application

Our Tatami Omote are woven from straw. They are of simple quality, but robust, easy to cut and, despite their low price, meet the requirements of a sword tester. The mat supplied is around 2 to 2.3 mm thick, unbound and measures 180 x 90 cm. When rolled up, it has a diameter of around 8 cm.

preparing the mat

To prepare for test cuts, the mat is rolled up as tightly as possible, tied and soaked in water for a few hours to allow it to swell. The soaked roll should then be left to dry completely (standing upright). This process achieves the density and strength required for cutting practice. The finished mat can then be mounted on a Tameshigiri stand and used.

Other uses

In addition to their use as martial arts accessories, the Tatami Omote can of course also be used for other purposes, e.g. as floor covering, screen, cover or simply for decoration in the house, garden or at Asian events.

Instructions for use

The stand shown above is not included in delivery!

Please note that cutting tests should only be carried out if you have sufficient experience in handling samurai swords. A lack of knowledge and skills can not only lead to damage or breakage of the blade, but can also cause health problems. We accept no liability for possible material damage, accidents or injuries that could arise from the cutting test.

Please note that straw is a natural product and variations in color are normal. Therefore, the images above are for illustrative purposes only. The color can vary from greenish to yellowish or brownish and will become lighter over time due to the normal aging process of the straw. Direct sunlight accelerates this natural fading.

If the mat is not used immediately upon delivery, please store it in a dry place.
