5 Meaningful Sinawali Drills for Your Solo Training

Do you want to improve your coordination, reaction time, and striking precision – even without a partner? Then Sinawali drills are exactly what you need. These double-stick exercises from Filipino Kali train both sides of the body, enhance body awareness, and are a lot of fun!

Here, we show you 5 effective Sinawali variations that you can practice alone – at home, in the gym, or in the park.

1. Basic 6-Count Sinawali (Heaven Standard)

The classic! Two diagonal strikes from above, one horizontal – alternating with both hands. Trains coordination, rhythm, and symmetry.

  • ✓ Great for beginners
  • ✓ Ideal warm-up exercise
  • ✓ Prepares for flowing combinations in Panantukan

2. Heaven to Earth Sinawali

Here, you switch from high to low strikes. You train the transition between upper and lower body targets – exactly as needed later in sparring.

  • ✓ Promotes dynamics and range perception
  • ✓ Strengthens leg and hip work through low stances

3. Reverse Sinawali

The direction of movement is reversed – you start with the backhand. This challenges your coordination in a new way and expands your movement vocabulary.

  • ✓ For advanced practitioners
  • ✓ Ideal for developing bilateral control

4. Freestyle Sinawali with Footwork

Combine basic drills with various footwork patterns: Triangle Footwork, side steps, backward steps. Goal: Understand and learn to use timing, angles & position.

  • ✓ Practice solo footwork
  • ✓ Build combative thinking

5. Sinawali + Shadowboxing

Within your solo training, switch from stick to unarmed movements: punch, destruction, elbow – then back to the stick. This creates a fluid mix of weapon work and Panantukan.

  • ✓ Train the transfer of principles
  • ✓ More realistic movement training
